planting the word

Good morning friends,
Today's reading may take a couple times through to get it; don't feel bad about that, but do give it a second try. The idea is that we've been renewed and claimed by God's love in Christ. The seed of our new life is the word of God. That phrase, "word of God" can mean different things. For instance, John's Gospel tells us that Jesus is the Word who existed before the world began. Most often we think of the word of God as scripture, which is also true, because, through the Holy Spirit, God does speak to us in scripture.

In this reading Peter says God's word is the good news (that God loves and redeems us in Jesus Christ). That good news plants the seed of a new relationship with God and a new live of love and service. That seed is planted and watered with scripture and never dies.

1 Peter 1:18-24

¹⁸You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, ¹⁹but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. ²⁰He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. ²¹Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. ²²Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. ²³You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.

²⁴For “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, ²⁵but the word of the Lord endures forever.” That word is the good news that was announced to you.

Good afternoon friends,
This week our theme is the blessing of scripture, which, by the Holy Spirit's power, is God's word to us. Paul reminds his friend and mentee, Timothy that often people aren't interested in living the right way and so people of faith will be persecuted. At the same time, Timothy has a strong, life-long foundation in faith and scripture. He learned this faith from his mother and grandmother, and also from God.

Christians have different beliefs about how to read and interpret scripture, but Paul's words are a landmark for me. He doesn't use confrontational words like "infallible," instead he says something most of us who spend quality time with the Bible can affirm: "All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness." Of course, like running shoes or a treadmill, we won't get much training out of the Bible unless we put it to use.

This week's theme is God speaking to us through scripture. Today, Paul gives Timothy some advice about being a leader in the church. Part of that advice is to focus on reading and teaching scripture, which helps us become more godly.

1 Timothy 4:7-16

Learning to pray

Good evening friends,

Today's reading has Jesus teaching his disciples using the Lord's prayer and two examples of persistence and generosity. Sometimes we feel like we don't know enough to pray, but truly we do. With practice and some learning we will grow closer to God. God wants to hear our prayers; it doesn't matter if we have the right words or not.

Luke 11:1-13

He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” ²He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Please pray for our local presbytery as we meet today to consider issues of common concern. Our topic for today is prayer. The psalmist reflects on times of feeling far from God and feeling bitter. In wiser moments, the psalmist knows that God is always with him. God is always with us; even in dark times we are not alone.

Good morning friends,
Today's reading is the basis of one of our songs for worship on Sunday. The writer has a strong relationship with God, but feels like God is far away. She also feels persecuted by enemies, some of whom used to be her friends. She remembers better times when she had the respect of her community, but now she feels alone and like everyone makes fun of her. People even pick on her because of her faith. The beauty of the psalm is its honesty about hardship and the psalmist's trust in God even when times are hard. I pray your day is easier than the psalmists, but that your faith would be strengthened and encouraged by hers.

Good morning brothers and sisters,
Since we're following the theme of prayer this week, you'll notice we're skipping around a lot. We move way ahead in the story of Jesus to the night of his last supper with the disciples and his arrest. Jesus spent time in prayer before his arrest. He prayed that his path might not go through the suffering and death he was preparing for. His prayer also helped him prepare for that path by allowing him to talk to his father and claim the choice that led to the cross. That way, when the soldiers came to arrest him he felt like he was following a choice rather than being forced into suffering.

Good morning sisters and brothers,
Often in the Gospels we read that Jesus went off on his own to pray. We don't see Jesus taking much time for himself in ministry, but we do see that he made his prayer life a priority. In this case he spent a whole night in prayer before deciding which of his disciples would be the core of the ministry after he returned to heaven. How can we find time to pray on our important decisions? Is there some step you can take to make prayer a bigger part of your decision making?

pray without ceasing

Good morning brothers and sisters,
This week our theme is prayer. In today's reading Paul closes his letter to the Thessalonian church with several short pieces of advice. The most familiar is to pray without ceasing. That means to keep up an awareness of God throughout the day. One thing that helps us do that is to be intentional about turning to God during the day. Often that means starting a day with some scripture reading and focused prayer and ending the day with reflection and prayer. It also includes short moments of thankfulness, perhaps at meals or other free moments. It also means spending some time in prayer when you're stuck on a question or problem or when you need to make a decision. All these intentional moments build the habit of turning to God and lead us to the constant prayer Paul encourages.

perfect love casts out fear

First, I'd like to ask you to keep our secretary Maria Bennett's father in prayer for God's healing touch. He's at Rochester General with pneumonia and needs God's care. Please also keep his wife, Ginny, and the whole family in prayer.

Our reading from 1 John tells us that God is love and the only way we know God is through love. God allows us to love by loving us. We respond by loving God, but even more, by loving other people. How we treat others is the test for whether we truly love God. When we really do love God and others, and we know that God loves us, fear will vanish because we know that love wins.

Good morning brothers and sisters,
This morning's readings remind us to put God first. Our first reading is called the Shema, from the Hebrew word for "hear." It is the core of Israel's faith and is followed by a warning from Moses not to forget God's love when Israel is finally safe in their land and secure. Moses knew that comfort can be a real risk to our faith, so we have to remember that everything we have comes from God.

Our reading from Matthew reminds us that God cares about our material needs and that worrying doesn't help anything. If we seek God's kingdom and follow Jesus faithfully, the other things will fall into place. That doesn't mean we'll have fancy cars and houses or that our life will be easy. Instead it means that God will give us what we need and we will probably learn to want less as we serve God and our neighbors.

Deuteronomy 6:4-16

Today's reading reminds us that we need to make time to just sit at Jesus' feet and listen. Our culture is so busy we can easily get overwhelmed by all the things we feel like we have to do. Many of the things we do are important, but it's also important to make time to just be. We are beloved children of God no matter how far we are on our "to do" list. Take time, slow down, rest in the master's hand.

Good morning sisters and brothers,
In today's reading a lawyer asks Jesus what the most important thing about following God is. Jesus turns the question around on him and gets the correct answer: love God with all your heart and mind and soul and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. When the lawyer wants to explore the limits of what it means to be a neighbor Jesus tells the familiar story of the good Samaritan. The truth is that everyone is our neighbor, so we are called to love everyone we come across as we love ourselves. That's quite a challenge, but when we look at Jesus life we see him doing just that. So our word for today is, "Go and do likewise."

Good morning friends,
One more reminder about tonight's ecumenical service for Christian unity at St Mark's and St. John's Episcopal Church on Culver at Rosewood. The service is at 7pm tonight and will feature pastors and musicians from several different churches. It should be a great time. I'd also like to ask your prayers for healing for Lindsey, a young woman from my last church who suffered a brain aneurism almost 2 weeks ago. She's doing very well, but still has a long way to go in her recovery.

Today's reading almost feels like a slap in the face. Three people come up to Jesus and want to follow him, but he leaves each with a warning that only total commitment is enough to follow him. I know my commitment needs work, but Jesus still loves and welcomes us. Sometimes I think we take his welcome too lightly and forget that discipleship is serious business.

Good morning brothers and sisters,
I wanted to remind you of a great worship opportunity tomorrow evening. We'll join our neighbors from other denominations to celebrate our unity in Christ and pray for greater unity in the church. The service will take place at St. Mark's and St. John's Episcopal Church on the corner of Culver and Rosewood. Worship begins at 7pm and will feature leaders from several different communities of faith. I hope you can be there.

Our reading this morning reminds us that being a Christian isn't casual; it's a commitment that shapes the rest of our life. Jesus faced death for our sake and he warns us that to follow him we have to accept that risk as well. In giving up ourselves we find true freedom in Christ.

The theme this week is making Jesus our foundation for life. In our passage today Jesus has finished teaching a crowd of people and challenges them not to be entertained but transformed. The important thing about following Jesus isn't just listening to what he has to say; it's doing what he says. The analogy Jesus uses is simple but effective; how can you take a step to put Jesus' words into action today?

Good morning sisters and brothers,
Jesus again reminds us that being forgiven by God calls us to forgive others. Judging is only God's job, our job is to direct any criticism at ourselves first and then, very carefully and only when necessary, dare to help others see their faults. It's often much easier to see what others are doing "wrong," but when we do that we're probably missing something at least as major wrong with our own life that keeps us from seeing our neighbor clearly.

Today's first reading is a wonderful Psalm about the freedom of confessing our sins and being forgiven. Forgiveness will be our theme in worship today, and it's an area that always needs attention. Our second lesson is Jesus' familiar golden rule: "treat others how you want to be treated." As usual, Jesus doesn't let that be just general advice for a happy life; instead he insists on applying it to the most difficult people we encounter. One of the hard things with words this familiar is to try to hear them fresh again. The message is a powerful one.

Psalm 32:1-11

Christ's love and our love

Today's reading comes from John's first letter. We don't spend a lot of time in John's letters, but they are very rewarding and present a somewhat different perspective from Paul. In this reading John makes the point that we know love by how Jesus loved us. That love is what saves us, not our actions. But when Christ's love makes us right with God, we naturally respond by loving others. So if we don't find ourselves driven to help others, we should pause and reflect on why. Further, love is about real actions, not just pretty words. Our calling is to live love in the world.

Good evening friends,
Today's reading reminds us that when we become Christian it means finding our identity in Jesus and rejecting those parts of our old identity that are opposed to God's kingdom. That means taking off the prejudice, selfishness and consumer identity the world encourages us to wear and putting on the love, openness and justice Jesus stood for. It also means putting forgiveness at the heart of our relationships with others. Jesus forgave us, so we forgive others; seeking love in all that we do. Letting our faith transform us can be hard because the world keeps bombarding us with contrary messages, but if we allow God to do so, the Spirit will work inside us to make us new in Christ.

Good morning brothers and sisters,
This is one of my favorite parables because it makes our situation and calling to forgive others so clear. God is merciful and forgives us all our sin. In turn we are called to forgive others for the ways they have hurt us. At the same time, even when we know we've been forgiven it can be tempting to hold on to our old grudges. May we find freedom to forgive in the knowledge that God loves us.

Good morning sisters and brothers,
This whole week our theme is forgiveness and reconciliation. Today's passage reminds us that God is always trying to forgive and bring sinners back home. Jesus also gives the church guidance on how to deal with sin inside the community of faith. This guidance goes counter to much of the world's wisdom about leaving others to do what they want. The goal here isn't interference, but reconciliation. If someone sins against you, the first step (if it's safe) is to speak to them one on one, where it's least likely to escalate the situation. If that doesn't work you need to enlist the help of other trusted Christians. If the person who has hurt you consistently won't change their ways at a certain point they need to be removed from the church. That's a hard situation to imagine, because God's forgiveness usually does win out if we really give it a chance. At the same time, truly harmful behavior left unchecked can poison a community and needs to be addressed openly and lovingly.

If there's a situation in your life that needs repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation, this is a good week to pray on it and seek a solution.

Good evening friends,
I'm sorry I didn't send this out earlier today, but since it's so late and since today and tomorrow's reading go together, I thought I would combine them into a single reading. Our reading is Psalm 51, which tradition says is King David's prayer of repentance after he had his officer Uriah killed to steal his wife, Bathsheba. The psalm is a beautiful reflection on God's forgiveness and our need. Many phrases in Psalm 51 are familiar and it is worth reading often when we feel lost of far from God. God already knows our shortcomings and loves us anyway. Don't let your sense of sin separate you from God; God is ready to hear you and heal you.

Today in the church year we celebrate Jesus' baptism and reflect on our own baptism into Christ's body. The passage from Isaiah reminds us that God loves us and calls us by name; even in hard times God never leaves us alone. Our passage from Luke tells the story of Jesus' baptism and his temptation in the desert before he began his ministry. As we start a new year it makes sense to reflect on who we are as God's children. These passages invite us to do just that.

slaughter of the innocents

Good morning sisters and brothers,
The wise men didn't know it at the time, but the reason King Herod asked them to give him information about Jesus was not so he could worship him, but so he could eliminate this perceived threat to his power. God warned the wise men about Herod's bad intentions, so they slipped out without being noticed. Herod is disappointed, but doesn't give up easily. Instead he casts a wide net and kills all the babies in Bethlehem. This terrible episode is known as the slaughter of the innocents. The Christian church has honored these unknown babies by considering them the first Christian martyrs. They didn't make choices that led to dying for their faith like most martyrs we think of, but they still died in some way for the sake of Christ. It's a sad story and sadder still that fear and faith still can lead to death. Let's pray and work for a day when innocents will no longer be slaughtered.

Epiphany

Today is the festival of Epiphany or Three Kings Day when we celebrate the arrival of the wise men to welcome Jesus. We see too that Christ's birth is a political event: King Herod immediately feels threatened by the announcement that a king has been born. While Herod's response is fear, the wise men respond with worship, worship for a child who will change the world. At Epiphany we are invited to consider the gifts God has given us. How can we use our gifts: our skills and passions as well as our treasure, to worship and serve Jesus today?

Good morning or evening friends,
Today's reading is a prophesy of restoration for Israel. From exile and despair God will make Israel a beacon to other nations. We read this passage when we think about the Christian celebration of Epiphany or Three Kings Day. The connection is that the epiphany celebrates the visit of the wise men to see baby Jesus. That symbolizes that Jesus is the savior for the whole world, not just for Israel. Part of our job as Christians is to keep that same spirit of openness, to shine the light of Christ's love so people outside the church will see it. God wants everyone to be part of the family, so we need to open the doors wide so the world can come in.

Good morning friends,
Nicodemus was a pharisee and a religious leader. He also wanted to know more about who Jesus was and what he was about, so he goes to see him at night. He opens the conversation by acknowledging that Jesus must have come from God because the powerful signs he does couldn't happen otherwise. Jesus replies with this paragraph about how no one can see God without being born from above (also translated "born again.")

This idea of being born again has been powerful both for good and for ill. On the positive side, Jesus' teaching emphasizes the new life and radical transformation that happens when we make God the center of our life. On the negative side, some Christians have tried to limit what it means to be "born again" and insist that one is not a real Christian without a very specific kind of rebirth experience. I believe that coming to Christ feels different for different people and not everyone has a shining light moment of rebirth. At the same time, our faith isn't the powerful force Jesus is talking about if it doesn't really change us. Sometimes being born again is sudden; other times it is subtle, but there is always change as we grow closer to Jesus in our new life.

The new year is a new beginning. God also gives us a new beginning in Jesus Christ. In Christ we are forgiven and given the chance to be new people through God's love. We have the opportunity to be reconciled to God and to become God's ambassadors in the world. Ambassadors do their best to represent their country favorably and to communicate the message their country sends to the world. As ambassadors of God, our job is to live in such a way it reflects well on God and to help others understand the message God wants them to hear: the message of love and reconciliation. That's our mission as Christians in this new year and always.

Good morning brothers and sisters,
The next two days we're reading from Ecclesiastes to help us reflect on the passing of one year and the beginning of another. Ecclesiastes is a book full of reflections on life. It sometimes feels pessimistic, but on balance it is realistic about the hardships and frustrations of life. At the same time, the conclusion the writer eventually comes to is that, while humans are limited in what we can do, and life is often frustrating, we can still find joy in following our calling and worshiping God. So for the morning reading, follow the Teacher's reflection, but take it with a grain of salt and more than a hint of joy.

Christ is born and rather than moving on to learning something else in scripture I'd rather dwell in the amazing love and surprising grace we see in the birth of our savior. Good morning brothers and sisters,
Our reading this morning is a psalm of praise to God. God's goodness and wisdom are amazing. One thing that jump out at me in this passage are that God always remembers his covenant. God keeps his covenant, even when we can't imagine how. I also appreciate the reminder that wisdom begins with seeking God, not with education or success or any of the other things we tend to value first. As we live into the miracle of Christmas, let's begin our wisdom with God and see where God leads us.

Isaiah gives us a touching image of God's love for God's people. Many Israelites felt like God had abandoned them. Isaiah lets the people know that there's no way God could ever forget God's people. Today Isaiah helps us rejoice about good news: the good news of God's redemption. John sets Jesus' birth in its cosmic place. Jesus is not just the anointed king, not just the son of God, but truly God who created the world. Even though the dark forces of the world can't accept Jesus, even though they try to extinguish his light; Christ's light and love keep shining. Thanks be to God; Alleluia!

Our last night of living nativity was a lot of fun and I'm excited about Christmas Eve. Just a reminder, our Christmas Eve service will begin at 7pm tonight (Saturday). Of course, that's the story we read together for our morning reading. Jesus is born, and right away God sends an angel to tell the shepherds. Good morning brothers and sisters,
Tonight is our last night of the living nativity from 6-8pm. If you've never seen it; it really brings the story of Jesus' birth to life. Come and bring a friend. In addition to the characters it would be great to have a couple of people helping Mike with hospitality. We'll be setting up hot drinks and cookies in the narthex beginning about 5:30. The evening is a great chance to welcome people to our church and, more importantly, to the story of Jesus.

That story is our reading for this morning. It's a familiar story for many of us, but it never stops amazing me. As you read, open your heart up and try to welcome Jesus into your life in a new way.

Good morning brothers and sisters,
Today's reading is a slight departure from our usual pattern. We're reading an excerpt from the Presbyterian Church's constitution, in particular from our Form of Government. The Presbyterian Church (USA) has a beautiful constitution, but at times it is challenging to read because it is somewhat dense. Today's reading talks about how the church is one church even though that doesn't always seem to be the place. Because we believe we are all one church through Jesus Christ, we are called to work for greater unity in the church. One way we do that at Laurelton is through our local ecumenical association, the North East Church Cluster. With this group of Christians from different denominations we will celebrate a service for Christian Unity in January.

Unity is God’s gift to the Church in Jesus Christ. Just as God is one God and Jesus Christ is our one Savior, so the Church is one because it belongs to its one Lord, Jesus Christ. The Church seeks to include all people and is never content to enjoy the benefits of Christian community for itself alone. There is one Church, for there is one Spirit, one hope, “one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all” (Eph. 4:5–6).

Because in Christ the Church is one, it strives to be one. To be one with Christ is to be joined with all those whom Christ calls into relationship with him. To be thus joined with one another is to become priests for one another, praying for the world and for one another and sharing the various gifts God has given to each Christian for the benefit of the whole community. Division into different denominations obscures but does not destroy unity in Christ. I chose today's reading as a reflection on this week's prayer theme, community. We are stronger and wiser in community than we are alone. That's true for us as individuals and for our congregations. Good morning friends,
This reading is a classic passage for those of us who love urban ministry. God has sent his people Israel into exile in Babylon, into a big city. It would be tempting for the people to withdraw into their own cocoon, depressed about their defeat and the challenges around them. God calls them to do something different; even though they are far from home, even though they are in the land of a nation that conquered them, God calls them to work to make the city better. We too can be tempted to retreat, but instead God calls us to invest in community, to seek the welfare of our city. In that work God brings about wholeness and blessing for us and for others.

Good morning friends,
I'd like to thank everyone who helped or stopped by to see the living nativity last night. We had a great time sharing the story of Christ's birth with our neighborhood. If you missed it last night, or if you saw it but want to play a part this time through, we'll be back in the manger on Friday at 6pm. Our passages today talk about community and God's amazing comfort for us. The Psalm talks about the beauty of Jerusalem, a city that symbolized for Israel the home of God's temple and the community of faith. The passage from Isaiah proclaims God's incredible forgiveness for Israel and for the world. God reaches out to us and calls us to come home. God also calls us to proclaim the good news of hope to others. With all our faults and failings, we are the ones who will share God's love with people in need of that good news. For whom might you be exactly the right person to introduce them to God's love?

This morning we will be putting together and delivering Christmas baskets and angel tree gifts. If you've chosen a child to buy a gift for, please bring it in to the church by 9:30 this morning. The morning of assembling and delivering these baskets is a lot of fun. If you're free you can join in the joy; it will remind you what Christmas is about.

Our passage from Isaiah talks about how God's redemption isn't just for Israel, but for everyone who seeks the Lord. Even those who think of themselves as less than others find a true place in God's sight. God's love and calling are for everyone, shepherds and angels, kings and peasants, people of Israel and Iraq; Afghanistan and the US. We are all God's people, on family joined together by God's amazing love and called to reach out to others with that love. May the love and peace of Jesus fill your heart today.

Good morning friends,

Today's reading is God's invitation to us to come home. God is just longing to forgive us and restore our lives and world. Good morning brothers and sisters,
The 24 hour prayer vigil has been a real blessing for me; a chance to visit with a few members of the church, a chance to sit in silence with God, a chance to reflect on our life together and where God is calling us now. Quiet in this season is a rare gift that reminds us of the true gift of the season, the mystery of the Christ child "veiled in flesh" as the hymn says. Today's reading reminds us to seek the things that really matter, to come to God for the free gift of life. Christ is the promise that one day everything will be right: everyone will have enough to eat, peace will reign on earth as it does now in heaven, and we will truly know the God who loves us so much. As we wait for Jesus to come into the manger, we pray for his peaceful, loving kingdom to come in our time.

Our reading today presents again God's call to justice through the Prophet Isaiah. Isaiah has hash words for powerful people who take advantage of the vulnerable. God has a special place in his heart for those in need, which we see most powerfully in Jesus' birth in a stable. God's love is overwhelming, and he always calls out to us to come home.

Today's reading comes from Deuteronomy, a book of sermons and final instructions for Israel before they entered the Promised Land. The topic today is care for the poor, which generally happened through loans from their neighbors. Those loans had no interest attached and all debts were to be cancelled every seven years. How does God call us to care for the poor among us today?

Hannah's song

Good morning brothers and sisters,
Today's passage echoes Mary's song of praise that we read yesterday, but comes from the Old Testament. Hannah was one of two women married to Elkanah. Hannah wasn't able to have children, but the other wife, Penninah was. Penninah made fun of Hannah for not having children and Hannah became distraught. One year when the family went to God's sanctuary in Shiloh to offer sacrifices, Hannah went to the sanctuary to pray for a son. She was so devoted and upset in her prayer that Eli, the priest thought she was drunk. She promised that if she had a son he would be devoted to the Lord. Sure enough, Hannah conceived and sings this song of praise to God when she dedicates him to God's service at the sanctuary. The son grew up to be the famous prophet Samuel who anointed both Saul and David as the first kings of Israel. Like Mary's song, Hannah's is a powerful statement about God's tendency to turn things upside down.

Good morning friends,
Soon after Mary heard the angel's message about her calling to be the mother of Jesus, she went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. She was probably hoping for some wisdom and support from this older woman who was also a part of God's amazing plan. When she got there Elizabeth heard Mary's voice and felt her own baby jump for joy. She praised God for the wonderful thing God was doing.

Mary responds with praise of her own. This passage is sometimes known as the song of Mary because it is beautifully poetic. It is also called the Magnificat because in Latin that is the first word Mary says (it means magnify or praise). Mary's words of praise are a beautiful expression of God's love for the oppressed and desire to bring justice to the world. This is a passage that rewards rereading because of its beauty and because it crystallizes how God's love in Jesus turns the world upside down.

the Spirit of the Lord

Good morning friends,
This is a favorite passage of mine from Isaiah. Isaiah reflects on his calling from God to be a prophet of hope and challenge: hope to those who are pressed down by injustice and challenge for those who are comfortable with the way things are. We also see something of a dialogue: Isaiah thinks about his calling and God proclaims that the future will be hopeful as justice grows and flourishes. The setting for the passage is probably when the people of Judah returned from the Babylonian exile to find their cities destroyed. It offers a word of hope for us as we seek to build up our troubles city in the power of God's justice.

One more thing I love about this passage is from the New Testament. During Jesus' ministry we often read that he went into the synagogue on a Sabbath to teach, but we only once hear much about his teaching: Luke 4. Jesus is teaching in his hometown of Nazareth and the beginning of this passage is the one he reads. As the first thing we read about his ministry, it is something of a mission statement: preaching good news to the poor and oppressed and comforting those who mourn. Jesus tells the crowd, "Today, this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." May we follow in his footsteps.

They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory.

Hagar and Ishmael

Good evening or morning brothers and sisters,
Today we continue our theme of mothers and children looking at the trouble story of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar. Both before and after God called Abraham and Sarah to leave their home for the promised land, Sarah was unable to have children. That was a problem not only because wanting to have children and being unable to is heart-breaking, but especially because God had promised to make Abraham's descendants into a great nation. That promised felt like a dead end without any kids. At one point Sarah proposed the idea of having Abraham sleep with Sarah's slave Hagar so they could have children that way. The trouble was when Hagar did conceive she and Sarah stopped getting along. When God's promise of a son through Sarah finally came true, Sarah wanted to make sure her son wouldn't have a rival for his inheritance. That's where our story takes off. God's love works even when our injustice seems worst.

⁹But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. ¹⁰So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.” ¹¹The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son. ¹²But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you. ¹³As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.”

Good morning sisters and brothers,
Our story of Elijah and the mother of Zarepheth continues this morning. Jesus refers to this story when he speaks in Nazareth early in his ministry. He makes the point that God often works through people who are unexpected, not even part of Israel. He uses this woman who lives in Zarepheth, which belongs to Sidon, not Israel, as an example. Perhaps not surprisingly, Jesus is almost killed for his message. The story itself is a weird healing story, but a powerful one too. God's healing power shows that the prophet speaks for God.

1 Kings 17:17-24

prophets in the wilderness

Good morning brothers and sisters,
This morning we remember the attack on Pearl Harbor that brought the US into World War II. We're grateful for the courage of our service men and women then and now. We also remember where we have fallen short as a nation. I recently talked with a Japanese American couple whose families were interned in prison camps during the war. Racism and irrational prejudice against immigrants continues to be a tragic national sin, and we need God's gift of repentance.

Our reading also speaks of a time for national repentance. During the Prophet Elijah's ministry Israel had fallen into idolatry to the point that Jezebel, the Queen of Israel persecuted the Lord's prophets and supported prophets of other gods. God called Elijah to invite Israel to repentance, which meant he spent much of his life on the run. As part of his witness for God, Elijah announced a three-year drought and famine in Israel to remind the people that God is in charge. During the first part of the drought Elijah was fed by ravens at a stream in the wilderness, but then the stream dried up. God's next move to support Elijah also reveals God's special care for the most vulnerable in society, in this case a widow and child. It's also a good reminder that the people hurt most by bad national policy are usually those who are already struggling. May we never forget our past so we can follow God into a more just and faithful future.

When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.” ¹¹As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” ¹²But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”

Good morning sisters and brothers,
Today's reading is a little off the beaten path for many of us as it comes from Revelation. Revelation is a strange book, but it's strange in some logical ways. Revelation is an example of apocalyptic literature: literature that speaks about God's power and love in dramatic ways, especially in revealing how that power will overcome seemingly impossible odds. Apocalyptic literature is usually written when God's people are in situations so challenging that it's hard to imagine God's will working through the everyday world.

In the case of Revelation the overwhelming challenge to God's people was the power of the Roman Empire, which demanded not only political allegiance, but often sought to claim people's worship as well. Apocalyptic literature is highly symbolic so the group for which it is written can understand while the threatening outside power is left in the dark. Today's passage is an apocalyptic retelling of the birth of Jesus. The dragon stands for Satan, but is also closely related to Rome. For Christians Jesus' birth is a defining moment in the constant struggle between God and the powers of hatred and evil. I like this passage because it reminds us that Jesus' birth is powerful by stripping away the familiarity that sometimes threatens to domesticate God's amazing story.

Good morning friends,
After Mary's surprising visit from the angel Gabriel, she went to see her relative Elizabeth. Gabriel had told her that Elizabeth, too, was pregnant in a miraculous way. It makes sense that Mary would have wanted to spend some time with an older relative as she reflected on the amazing change coming into her life. It also makes sense that she would have specifically sought out Elizabeth as another woman touched by this amazing piece of God's plan. We don't learn a lot about the visit, but the interaction between the two women is touching and powerful. Even though it takes Jesus' disciples half of the Gospel to figure out who Jesus is, Elizabeth knows right when Mary comes in the door that he is the Lord. Praise God for the strong faith of these two women.

In our reading from Isaiah this morning Isaiah talks about what the Messiah's kingdom will look like. We see righteousness, peace and wholeness as the marks of this kingdom in place of the selfishness, injustice and violence that characterize most of the kingdoms we know today. Luke tells the story of how Mary became pregnant. I'm always blown away by her faith and courage. Gabriel invites Mary to a dangerous calling that puts her future marriage and her life in danger. I pray we would find hope in Isaiah's kingdom image while we embrace the challenge of Mary's faith.

After 9 months of silence, Zechariah finally speaks, and he speaks with the Holy Spirit's power. He reveals what God is planning with the future ministry of John the Baptist and the ministry of Jesus. One thing that's worth paying as you read this (and the whole beginning of Luke) is that Luke is a gifted writer. As he tells the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, he's also setting the stage for the story of Jesus. The themes he highlights in these passages will be helpful clues about what's going to be important in the rest of the story. This morning, enjoy the Spirit's poetry; this is a passage that's worth coming back to often to ponder the amazing love of God.

Luke 1:67-80

⁶⁷Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy: ⁶⁸“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favorably on his people and redeemed them. ⁶⁹He has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David, ⁷⁰as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, ⁷¹that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.

⁷²Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, ⁷³the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us ⁷⁴that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, ⁷⁵in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

Before we dive into this morning's reading I'd like to introduce you to our new website. My friend Chris Montesano has redesigned the site with help from my brother, Will Picard. I'm grateful to David Hoover for getting us started with the great website we've been enjoying for the last year. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. ²⁰But now, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time, you will become mute, unable to speak, until the day these things occur.”

Good morning friends,
Jesus concludes his description of his return in our reading for today. It's hard to imagine the scene when Christ comes back, but one thing seems for sure: we won't miss it. As subtle and easy to overlook as his original birth in Bethlehem was, his return at the conclusion of history will be dramatic and obvious. We don't know when it will happen, but we know how to prepare. We prepare with lives of faith, love and service. Advent is a great time to practice and to get our hearts ready for Christ's return.

Mark 13:24-37

Good afternoon sisters and brothers,
Jesus continues his description of the troubles to come that will mark the end of the world. There's always the temptation to predict when this might happen, but Jesus tells us even he doesn't know when the end will come. Instead we should hear his warning that things will be rough before the end and that there will be many who try to deceive us. We know what we need to know to face the trouble that will come. We know Christ loves us and will bring us safely home in the end. In the meantime, we know our calling: to love God and love our neighbor. Anything that tries to pull us away from that calling is not from God. We have the Holy Spirit and the community to strengthen and guide us, so let us keep the faith.

Good morning friends,
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. As we begin the season of Advent we prepare our hearts to receive Christ as a baby in Bethlehem and as our king at the end of time. Today's reading is from Mark chapter 13, which scholars call the "Markan apocalypse" because it is a fairly long section in Mark on the end of time. Apocalypse means revelation and it refers to a whole genre of literature and thinking focused on how God will act decisively to bring history to the right conclusion. This was an important kind of literature in Judaism at this time as the Roman Empire's control made it hard to imagine anything but a radical act of God bringing freedom to Israel. We see this kind of literature in the Old Testament book of Daniel and the book of Revelation. Jesus predicts trouble for the faithful before God's final victory. We too can expect hardship in our walk of faith, but God is always faithful, and in the end his love will triumph.

Today's reading is also about being grateful for our gifts. In Jesus' time Samaritans were strongly looked down on, so it's shocking when Luke makes the Samaritan the hero of this story. Saying "Thank you" is a powerful action. May gratitude guide and strengthen you today.

I'm grateful for the privilege of ministering with you at Laurelton. This is a special community and I treasure your gifts and our time together. Paul reminds the Corinthian church that God gives them possessions not for themselves but so they can share them with others. He encourages them to give thanks for what they have by giving generously. He also encourages them to give thanks for God's grace by sharing the gospel with others. Even the hardships the community faces provide an opportunity to glorify God through obedience and persistence.

Thanksgiving Psalm

Good morning sisters and brothers,
Last night's ecumenical service was lots of fun. There were people from at least six different churches and lovely music. One of the pieces we sang that was particularly fun was a responsive setting of the Psalm we're reading today. We sang a congregational response: "The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest," while a cantor sung verses between the refrains. It was a nice way to hear the psalm and to celebrate God's amazing gift of harvest.

Today we are not having supper and scripture because of Thanksgiving tomorrow. There will be a Thanksgiving feast at Laurelton on Thursday at 4pm hosted by Gary and Susan Dennis along with the Outreach ministry team. Wherever you are for the holiday I pray it will be a time of joy and gratitude for you.

Good morning brothers and sisters,
Today's reading is a Thanksgiving reading from Deuteronomy. As we start the day with this reading I'd like to remind you of our ecumenical Thanksgiving service at Laurelton tonight at 7pm with our neighbor churches. The point of Deuteronomy is to remind Israel of their past and prepare them for their future in the land God is giving them.

One of our leaders put it well last night in a discussion about prayer. She said it's sometimes hard to pray when things are going well. That's one of Moses' main concerns for the people of Israel after he dies and they settle into the land. He worries Israel will forget that all the good things they have come from God. They'll give themselves too much of the credit for what they have and become arrogant and complacent in their faith. Keeping this book with them would help Israel remember that God gave them everything they have.Thanksgiving does the same for us. Thanksgiving reminds us of all our blessings and reminds us that those blessings are a gift from God.

Deuteronomy 8:7-18

Paul rejoices in the faith of the Ephesian Christians and prays that their faith will keep growing. He tells them he hopes God will give them wisdom to see the power and glory Christ will have when he returns. Being confident of God's love and power helps us to stand firm in our faith when life and ministry are difficult. So I join my prayer with Paul's that we would all be full of God's wisdom and confident in God's power.

Joshua 4:17-24

¹⁷Now Sisera had fled away on foot to the tent of Jael wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between King Jabin of Hazor and the clan of Heber the Kenite. ¹⁸Jael came out to meet Sisera, and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me; have no fear.” So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug. ¹⁹Then he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink; for I am thirsty.” So she opened a skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him. ²⁰He said to her, “Stand at the entrance of the tent, and if anybody comes and asks you, ‘Is anyone here?’ say, ‘No.’”

²¹But Jael wife of Heber took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple, until it went down into the ground—he was lying fast asleep from weariness—and he died. ²²Then, as Barak came in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to meet him, and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” So he went into her tent; and there was Sisera lying dead, with the tent peg in his temple. ²³So on that day God subdued King Jabin of Canaan before the Israelites. ²⁴Then the hand of the Israelites bore harder and harder on King Jabin of Canaan, until they destroyed King Jabin of Canaan.

Deborah and Barak

Good morning sisters and brothers,
Deborah, the judge of Israel, encouraged Barak to lead the army of Israel against the the Canaanite King Jabin and his general, Sisera. Today we see that Barak agrees to go, but only if Deborah goes with him. Deborah seems disappointed in this response, maybe because Barak doesn't show enough trust in God. As we'll see, God does fight for Israel to save them. There are lots of place names here that can throw us off; some Bibles have maps in them, but in this case you can also just ignore them without missing too much. My suspicion is that some of these places won't even be on most maps of the Bible. Just enjoy the story as it unfolds. For those of us who are used to a more peaceful ethic, these violent passages can be challenging. I'm grateful that Jesus is the Prince of Peace, but also grateful that God can save the weak from more powerful enemies.

¹⁰Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and ten thousand warriors went up behind him; and Deborah went up with him. ¹¹Now Heber the Kenite had separated from the other Kenites, that is, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had encamped as far away as Elon-bezaanannim, which is near Kedesh. ¹²When Sisera was told that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor, ¹³Sisera called out all his chariots, nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the troops who were with him, from Harosheth-ha-goiim to the Wadi Kishon.

¹⁴Then Deborah said to Barak, “Up! For this is the day on which the Lord has given Sisera into your hand. The Lord is indeed going out before you.” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand warriors following him. ¹⁵And the Lord threw Sisera and all his chariots and all his army into a panic before Barak; Sisera got down from his chariot and fled away on foot, ¹⁶while Barak pursued the chariots and the army to Harosheth-ha-goiim. Deborah the judge

Good morning sisters and brothers,
We're not going to read a lot of Judges, but I thought I would include this story because it shows us a woman in leadership, an image that is too rare in scripture to pass up. The judges were generally military and all-purpose leaders. Deborah is the only one who is explicitly associated with "judging" as we usually think of it. She is the second judge we read about, the first being Ehud. As we see in the readings, this story follows the general pattern our introduction laid out: judge dies; Israel turns away from God; God allows enemies to oppress them; Israel cries out; God sends a judge to rescue Israel and the people turn back to God. Let's see how Deborah's leadership will save Israel.

Today's reading gives us a quick summary of the Book of Judges. Israel turns away from God to worship idols. Then God is angry and allows their enemies to oppress Israel. Before long God can't stand to hear Israel's groaning and sends a judge to save them. The people turn back to God under the judge and are victorious over their enemies. The cycle repeats several times during the book, and by the end it is clear that Israel needs a king chosen by God to lead it. Even this is challenging, it will turn out, because kings inevitably become corrupted by the power God gives them for ministry. May we follow the Lord and be faithful to our calling today.

Judges 2:14-19

¹⁴So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers who plundered them, and he sold them into the power of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. ¹⁵Whenever they marched out, the hand of the Lord was against them to bring misfortune, as the Lord had warned them and sworn to them; and they were in great distress.

¹⁶Then the Lord raised up judges, who delivered them out of the power of those who plundered them. ¹⁷Yet they did not listen even to their judges; for they lusted after other gods and bowed down to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their ancestors had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord; they did not follow their example. ¹⁸Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord would be moved to pity by their groaning because of those who persecuted and oppressed them. ¹⁹But whenever the judge died, they would relapse and behave worse than their ancestors, following other gods, worshiping them and bowing down to them. They would not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways.

Good morning friends,
We've followed the outlines of Joshua's life as he led Israel into the Promised Land. Now Joshua is dead and things get challenging for Israel's faithfulness. The next few days introduce the Book of the Judges and a particularly disturbing part of Israel's story. With what follows the temptation is to look at Israel's failing and (as David Brooks wrote this morning in the NY Times) "feel superior." The more helpful spiritual practice with readings like these is to reflect on how we turn away in our discipleship and how we can learn to be more faithful. After all, we follow a savior who was faithful unto death.

Judges 2:7-13

⁷The people worshiped the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work that the Lord had done for Israel. ⁸Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred ten years. ⁹So they buried him within the bounds of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. ¹⁰Moreover, that whole generation was gathered to their ancestors, and another generation grew up after them, who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.

¹¹Then the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and worshiped the Baals; ¹²and they abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; they followed other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were all around them, and bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. ¹³They abandoned the Lord, and worshipped Baal and the Astartes.

Today's reading is Paul's closing encouragement to the church at Thessalonica. He encourages them to keep the faith and to treat others well. He also reminds them that it is God who will keep them safe and faithful. The advice that was good for the Thessalonians is good for us today as well, and the one who calls us is faithful.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

¹²But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you, and have charge of you in the Lord and admonish you; ¹³esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Good morning brothers and sisters,
Our readings for today are the same ones we'll talk about in worship. In the first reading Paul encourages the Thessalonian Christians to act like Christians and walk in the light of Christ's love. In Jesus' parable we hear about three servants their master entrusts with money while he is away on a trip. Two of them put their talent (a unit of money, but a great metaphor too) to good use and accomplish a lot. The third servant is scared of messing up so he hides his talent. How are you doing with using the gifts God has given you? Do you sense God calling you to something new?

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

¹Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. ²For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. ³When they say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape!

¹⁴“For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; ¹⁵to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. ¹⁶The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. ¹⁷In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. ¹⁸But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

Joshua's death

Good morning friends,
After warning the people of Israel that God takes commitment seriously the people still want to make a commitment to God. So today Joshua reaffirms that commitment with laws for the life of faith. Then everyone goes to their assigned land that they have conquered and Joshua's time is over. With Joshua's death the passage makes us wonder what will happen next. Will Israel keep their promises? We face the same question everyday. God calls us to be faithful to our baptismal promises of faith, love and service. Will we follow through on our commitments? By the Holy Spirit's power God gives us the strength to follow, and there is joy in the journey.

Joshua 24: 25-33

²⁵So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem. ²⁶Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a large stone, and set it up there under the oak in the sanctuary of the Lord. ²⁷Joshua said to all the people, “See, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all the words of the Lord that he spoke to us; therefore it shall be a witness against you, if you deal falsely with your God.” ²⁸So Joshua sent the people away to their inheritances.

²⁹After these things Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being one hundred ten years old. ³⁰They buried him in his own inheritance at Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. ³¹Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the work that the Lord did for Israel. ³²The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem, in the portion of ground that Jacob had bought from the children of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of money; it became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph. ³³Eleazar son of Aaron died; and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of his son Phinehas, which had been given him in the hill country of Ephraim.
