shepherd and gate?

Good evening friends,

Today's reading starts a meditation from Jesus on who he is. We'll see that one metaphor isn't enough to understand Jesus. Jesus helps his listeners understand who he is by comparing himself not only to a shepherd, but also to a gate that protects the sheep. The reality of Jesus is bigger than anything we can imagine. Jesus comes to protect, guide, nurture and bless us.

John 10:1-10

“Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. ²The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. ³The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. ⁴When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. ⁵They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.”

⁶Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. ⁷So again Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. ⁸All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. ⁹I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. ¹⁰The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Good morning brothers and sisters,
Our story of the disciples' fishing trip continues with a special discussion between Peter and Jesus. Jesus takes an opportunity to restore Peter after his denial and to prepare him to lead the early church. Love is going to be the heart of his leadership, so Jesus emphasizes love as he calls him to tend the flock. He also warns him that the days ahead will be difficult. Tradition tells us that most of the disciples ended up losing their life for their faith, and Peter was no exception. Our calling may not be as high profile as Peter's, but we are all called to love, care and follow.

John 21:15-26

¹⁵When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” ¹⁶A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” ¹⁷He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. ¹⁸Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” ¹⁹(He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.” 

²⁰Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” ²¹When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” ²²Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!” ²³So the rumor spread in the community that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” ²⁴This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. ²⁵But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

Good morning church,
Today's readings remind us that Jesus is our loving shepherd who guides us forward. It's not always easy to hear his voice, but when we listen for it, we recognize him and follow with joyful trust. In Christ we find true, abundant life, so let us follow.

Good morning friends,
As a reminder, Jane Van Lare's memorial service will be held at Laurelton this morning at 10:30 with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Pennfield. Please keep the Van Lare family in your prayers. Today's reading is a rebuke to the leaders of Judah and Israel. God is speaking through Jeremiah and accuses the leaders, the shepherds of leading the people of Israel astray. Then God promises that in their place he will raise up a new king, a faithful shepherd to lead the flock to safety.

God also refers to this future king as a "righteous Branch" of David. That means the future king, the Messiah, will be a descendant of David, fulfilling the promise God made to David to keep one of his descendants on Israel's throne. Christians believe that this promise was fulfilled in Jesus, who we call the Messiah or Christ. Jesus gathers together lost sheep not just from Israel but from the whole world. May you feel Christ's gentle shepherding today.

1Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the LORD. 2Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. 3Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD.


5The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness."

Good morning sisters and brothers,
This morning's reading features Jeremiah speaking for God and accusing the leaders of Judah of unfaithful leadership. More specifically, God accuses the leaders, the shepherds, of taking advantage of the people for their own gain instead of taking care of them. Notice the word play on "attend," which is used both in the sense of care and in the sense of revenge. You could replace "attend" with "take care of" if that makes it easier to understand: "Because you haven't taken care of my people I will take care of you.

Judah's leaders haven't led and care for the people properly, so God will get rid of those leaders and raise up new leaders to gather and care for God's people. The second paragraph here is a common Advent text that we read as pointing to the ministry of Jesus, the new shepherd not only of Israel and Judah but also of the world. We look forward to the day when Christ will gather all the people together in peace in harmony. Amen; come Lord Jesus.
