a sick friend

Good afternoon friends,

Today's reading shows Jesus, the good shepherd in action. One of his friends, Lazarus, is sick; Jesus doesn't go to see him until after he dies, but Jesus can even raise the dead. Sometimes I wonder why some people find healing or new life and others don't. It's hard to read a story like this one if you're grieving someone who has died recently. We are fragile, and usually when we die we stay dead. But even when we grieve, God can work in us to bring healing and new life, if not physically, spiritually. Sometimes our grief is even the way we move into something new.

John 11:1-10

Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. ²Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. ³So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” ⁴But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 

⁵Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, ⁶after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. ⁷Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” ⁸The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” ⁹Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. ¹⁰But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them.”

Good morning brothers and sisters,
This morning we launch into another of John's extended stories. John sets the stage by introducing Mary, Martha and Lazarus and announcing that Lazarus was ill. Jesus gets ready to go to him and the disciples warn him of the risks, since the religious leaders have become violent in their opposition to him. Here we see a different side of "Doubting" Thomas. Thomas is ready to die with his Lord. We wonder too, why Jesus says he is glad Lazarus is dead. We'll see how the story plays out from here.

But let us go to him.” 16Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
