Good evening friends,
Today's reading brings it back to the basics of the Christian faith. Jesus loves us enough to lay down his life. He calls us to follow by loving others with the same commitment. Easy, maybe not; but it's not complicated.

John 15:9-17
9As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

connected to Christ
Good evening friends,
”I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. 2He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you.
Today's reading stresses the connection of Christians to Jesus. All that we are comes from him, and cut off from him we can do nothing. This very much goes against the grain of our culture's focus on self-reliance, so spend a few minutes with the challenge that presents to you.

abiding in Jesus
Good morning sisters and brothers,
I hope the long weekend is treating you well. It's good to remember the reason for the holiday, which is remembering the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. Our passage for today comes from Jesus last lesson to his disciples before his arrest. He is telling them what is to come. He teaches about the Holy Spirit and about how they need to abide in him by resting in his love. He is the vine and we are the branches. We're all connected by love.

say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you
would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than

abiding in Christ
Good morning friends,
I'm back in Rochester after a great week with colleagues reflecting on life and ministry. Thanks for the prayers and good wishes; it's good to be back. Today's reading continues Jesus' discussion with the disciples at the last supper. He talks about how important it is for us to stay with him (abide in him). We are like branches of a vine and Christ is the root of the vine. Without him, we wither and dry up, but with Christ we can do anything. That promise for the first disciples is still ours today.

abiding in love
Good morning brothers and sisters,
Jesus tells his disciples that he loves them and that keeping his commandments will help them rest closely in his love. Try not to be put off by the word commandment; as we'll find out the commandment is to love one another. We often think of commands and commandments negatively, but Jesus' commandments are about love and discipleship. He leads the way by showing us the greatest love by laying down his life for his friends. That's a good word this week as we remember our fallen military brothers and sisters, and it's a good word as we think about Jesus call to discipleship. The call to discipleship is a call to follow Jesus in loving others actively. True love isn't fuzzy and it sometimes costs us dearly. So let us abide in Christ's love and bear lasting fruit for the kingdom.

abide in Christ's love
Good morning sisters and brothers,
Jesus continues his final words to his disciples with this image of a vine and its branches. As Christ's disciples we are only effective or faithful when we stay connected to Christ, our root. Notice that even when we're doing what we should be "bearing fruit," Jesus doesn't lead us to expect comfort or ease. Instead, he says God "prunes" us so we bear more fruit. Elsewhere he warns the disciples they will be hated for his sake. We don't follow Jesus because it's easy, but because with Jesus we find true and abundant life. Spend a little time reflecting on this word Jesus uses repeatedly: "abide." How can you abide in Jesus more fully?
