Good morning brothers and sisters,
Today's reading is a great story that follows up on the raising of Lazarus. We're moving closer to Jesus' death now, so the story gets darker. As it gets darker, it also becomes beautiful beyond belief. No matter how much fear and hatred we see in the story, love is still more powerful.

John 12:1-11
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. 3Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, 5“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” 6(He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. 8You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”
9When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death as well, 11since it was on account of him that many of the Jews were deserting and were believing in Jesus.

As Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead, this miracle becomes yet another point of conflict with the religious leaders. John's discussion of the religious council meeting is powerful, especially in how meaning and events move at more than one level simultaneously. The stage is now set for the events of Holy Week and Jesus' journey to the cross.

John 11:38-57
38Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. 46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what he had done. 47So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council, and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs. 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our holy place and our nation.” 49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! 50You do not understand that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed.”
51He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation, 52and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the dispersed children of God. 53So from that day on they planned to put him to death. 54Jesus therefore no longer walked about openly among the Jews, but went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness; and he remained there with the disciples.55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. 56They were looking for Jesus and were asking one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? Surely he will not come to the festival, will he?” 57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where Jesus was should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

Good afternoon brothers and sisters,
Today's reading brings us almost to the end of Jesus journey to Jerusalem. Jesus has recently raised Lazarus from the dead and pauses on the way to Jerusalem for a meal with his friends Mary, Martha and Lazarus. The darkness is growing and we know Jesus' death is coming quickly. Even with that backdrop, there is space for love and beauty.

dry bones and a sealed tomb
Good afternoon friends,
Sorry I didn't get this out earlier today. If you were in church you heard Carl preach a great sermon on the story of Lazarus. In reality, both stories today have a similar message. Ezekiel prophesied when Judah went into exile. Even though the temple was defiled by invading armies and the people were driven out of the land God promised them, their story was not over. God can give life even to try bones, even to dead bodies. Trouble, hardship, separation and even death threaten us, but they never have the last word. God's love is stronger than any force that threatens us.

1The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. 3He said to me, “Mortal, can these bones live?” I answered, “O Lord GOD, you know.” 4Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD.”
7So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. 9Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” 10I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude.
11Then he said to me, “Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.’ 12Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. 14I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken and will act,” says the LORD.

extravagant love
Good morning church,
Yesterday we began Holy Week with Palm Sunday and Jesus's triumphant entry into Jerusalem. During Holy week there's a lot going on at church (check the website for the schedule of events; everyone is welcome and encouraged to join in all of our worship opportunities). In our daily readings during Holy Week we'll be taking a break from Acts to follow Jesus during this intense period. As you'll notice, we'll have a couple of different Gospels represented, so the order of events won't necessarily fit together, but spending time with Jesus in his last week will bring us deeper into the story.
In this morning's reading Jesus goes to eat with Mary, Martha and Lazarus, whom he has recently raised from the dead (Chapter 11). We see that this miracle brings many people to Jesus and also brings the wrath of the religious leaders on Lazarus as well as Jesus. In a show of remarkable love Mary anoints Jesus's feet with perfume and dries them with her hair. While Judas is scandalized, Jesus sees the love behind the action and praises her. Sometimes in the church we are afraid of physical things, but God gives us bodies as well as spirits to worship him and to love others. We begin Holy Week with Mary, worshiping at Christ's feet.
